Pasifika Staff Hui #1: 6th August, 2020
The Ministry of Education recently released the much anticipated Action Plan for Pacific Education 2020-2030 document. The Action Plan maps the Government's commitment to 'transforming outcomes for Pacific learners and families and signals how early learning services, schools and tertiary providers can achieve change for Pacific learners and their families'.
With this document as a guide, our Pasifika staff had been given the chance to talanoa about our experiences as Pasifika staff of Tamaki College but also share our educational experiences growing up. This was the first of 3 Hui held in 2020.
In the first Hui, staff were asked 3 questions:
Thinking about this new journey we are embarking on - is it worth it? Why or why not?
What are your thoughts about being part of our Pasifika Hui? What’s your why?
What actions do you think we could do to enable your thoughts to happen?
The feedback from staff was positive and the meeting a success.
Pasifika Staff Hui #2: 23rd September, 2020
Our 2nd Pasifika Staff Hui was held online after a long day at school.
Here, Mele Suipi-Latu shared with the Pasifika Staff their feedback from the 1st and analysed by grouping feedback what our staff were saying.
She then matched it with the Action Plan and the Tapasa and made engaging suggestions to allow staff input into our next actions moving forward.
Pasifika Staff Hui #3: 25th November, 2020
Our 3rd and final Hui was held at the end of November, close to the end of the year. We wanted to make sure that we closed the year knowing where we'd come from, where we were at and where we wanted to get to.
Mele share a short video of her old lecturer Konai Helu Thaman and then we introduced the 4 strands and the action plan.
The 4 strands encompasses all areas of school life that allow for a balanced and culturally responsive curriculum.
Staff agreed that to move forward, we need to ensure that we support each other, our learners and their families as well as our non-Pasifika body.
Pasifika Staff Committee
In March of this year, it was decided that we would have a working committee to share the responsibility of implementing our Pasifika Initiative.
The group is made up a mix of Pasifika cultures who would meet regularly to discuss important events and programmes coming up.
The members are Ms Kumar, Mr Stevenson, Mrs Suipi-Latu, Ms Apelu, Alvina Pau'uvale, Mrs Heka, Ms Robertson and DJ Tuaru.
