Fifth-grade students tend to have an earlier lunch. Students can bring a daily snack to prevent the "grumbellies" mid-afternoon. We require HEALTHY snacks such as fruits, vegetables, crackers, chips, etc. Please avoid sugary snacks such as candy, cake, or anything that requires a utensil. These snacks can have a negative impact on learning. Most frequently, students will be having a "working snack."
Additionally, we recommend that you send in a water bottle with a lid of a closed top. Students are allowed to drink WATER from these containers in order to keep hydrated. We ask that there be NO flavoring or mix in packets!
Stay connected to the classroom using Class Dojo and email.
Each week, you can expect an email and an update on the Class Dojo story from one of the teachers. These are important because they will give you updates on any homework, upcoming events, new learning that will occur, etc. Please check Dojo for any messages from the teachers throughout the week. We do not use class dojo as a point system but we do use It to communicate.
While we know that phones are Important to students and families for safety purposes, we ask that no phones be brought Into the classroom. This Is not only our classroom policy but also a school policy. All phones should be kept In book bags, Inside their lockers and should not be used during the school day for any reason at all. If there Is an emergency and you need to reach your student, please call the office or our extension.
We are not heavy on homework In 5th grade, as we know the Importance of students having a break from school and school work when they get home. We also know that families are busy and have many things to fit Into their evenings after school.
With that said, If a student Is behind on work because of lack of effort/not using their time wisely, they may be asked to complete an assignment at home. This creates a culture and environment where students end up assigning themselves homework and owning their decision not to utilize their classroom time properly. Additionally, there may be times when things cannot be completed fully at school and require time at home.
Please be aware that we will always let you know If there are assignments to be completed at home but that we need your help In ensuring students are doing so! Students should always be reading each night from an appropriate, at-level text. This is important for their continued growth as readers.
