Our district views Generative AI (GenAI) as an optional tool to enhance teaching and learning, and empower students. For educators who choose to integrate GenAI into their instruction, we emphasize a human-centered approach, meaning that AI tools are used to support and amplify human learning, not replace it. Our guidelines focus on responsible and effective integration, ensuring that any GenAI use is transparent, adheres to age restrictions and terms of use, and prioritizes the protection of student personal information. We also couple its use with appropriate digital citizenship and AI literacy instruction.
Protecting student privacy is a top priority when using AI tools. AI-powered tools often require data to function effectively, which can raise privacy concerns. To mitigate these risks, our district is committed to protecting personal information and student data by not sharing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) with AI tools. We also:
Adhere to a principle of data minimization, collecting only strictly necessary information.
Establish clear data privacy policies that outline how personal information will be collected, stored, and used, making them transparent and accessible to families.
Review the privacy policies of any AI tools used and instruct users to avoid sharing personal information in prompts.
No, it is not an expectation that teachers must use AI tools. Instead, our guidelines provide best practices for those who choose to utilize AI in their instruction. The integration of AI tools is age-appropriate and progressively builds in complexity as students mature. For example:
Lower Elementary (K-2): The focus is on building awareness of AI as a concept present in the world and as a tool that helps us, distinct from human intelligence. Use is typically adult-led with vetted AI-powered adaptive learning platforms.
Upper Elementary (3-5): Students may have access to age-appropriate educational AI tools in an educator-led setting. Additionally, adult may demonstrate the use of different AI tools
Middle School (6-8): Structured, educator-directed AI use may occur, with some opportunities for self-directed projects within approved educational AI tools. Compliance with age restrictions is key.
High School (9-12): There's a balance of structured, supervised use with opportunities for independent, self-directed use of district-approved GenAI tools, guided by district policies and academic integrity. Discussions delve deeper into ethics, safety, capabilities, and limitations, and explore AI applications in potential careers.
Our district's approach to GenAI use is always in service of enhancing learning and empowering students. For older students, particularly in high school, AI use is anchored in developing durable skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving, with a strong emphasis on enhancing human originality, not replacing it. We aim for thoughtful human-AI collaboration where AI acts as a tool to support and extend student capabilities.
