Sixth Grade Curriculum

Overview:

Religion: We focus on the Old Testament, specifically the Books of Genesis and Exodus. The students will tour the Church and study the parts of the Mass in depth. The Diocese mandates that we cover a “Think First, Stay Safe” Program. We will celebrate the Liturgical Year and focus on Advent and Lent. Jesus is our inspirational and model.

Math: The Common Core Math Standards for grade 6 include: integers, ratios, unit rate and proportional relationships, arithmetic operations with a focus on dividing fractions, integers and the coordinate plane, expressions and equations, area, volume and surface area. In March we will do a March Madness Math Project that focuses on basic statistics and graphs using data on line,

Spelling: We begin the year with a list of most misspelled words. The regular 30 units of study are incorporated into the new Reading series “Journeys.” In January there will be a Spelling midterm and a final exam in June. Each exam covers ½ year of Spelling words.

ELA: Holy Cross is in alignment with the Common Core State ELA Standards. The five units of “Journeys” highlight the most important State Standards in writing, speaking and listening. Assessments are rigorous and demand answers to more complex questions. The new series is completely aligned and integrated with our technology. Class focused novels include The View from Satuday, A Girl Named Disaster, A Wrinkle in Time, Where the red Fern Grows etc. Sixth grade also develops a unit in Poetry that culminates in a special Poetry Café for families.

Science: The Middle School Science Program begins in 6th grade. The recently released standards focus on problem solving through inquiry. Core 6th grade topics include the scientific method, scientific tools, understanding the microscope, discovering cells, Earth’s make-up, Theory of Plate Tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes, rocks and minerals, simple machines and types of energy. Extended lessons on safety are also part of the 6th grade curricula.
