Does the consumer have to have a Cash Card VISA to receive a gift card?
No; however, if the recipient does not have a physical Cash Card VISA, they will be prompted to apply for one in order to accept the Gift card. In the event that they do not order a Cash Card VISA, customers will be given the option to convert the Gift Card funds to their Cash App balance. If customers without a card don’t take either action (order card or convert to cash after 30 days), the gift card will be converted to cash automatically. For customers with the Cash Card VISA, the gift card will just land in their account and be available immediately to spend.
Is there a plan to extend this program to all Cash App users, not just Cash Card VISA consumers?
At this time, the product is only available to Cash Card VISA consumers, but Cash App will explore expanding this program in the future.
Can Cash App provide the list of merchants accepting Cash App Pay online?
Square, Adyen, After Pay
What happens in the case of a return?
Funds are returned via Cash App Card into the applicable gift card. I.e. if customer buys $10 worth of goods from Nike, returns that order and has it refunded, the refund will go back into the Nike Gift Card on that customer’s account. This is important to confirm for merchants since they will pay InComm upon gift card redemption.
Who is managing customer service?
Cash App will be servicing its consumers.
How will fraud be handled? Fraud will be extremely unlikely as this program follows a good funds model – funds are transferred from one existing user to another. Additionally, Cash App has developed a variety of fraud tools supporting both the peer-to-peer funds movement and the Cash Card. These enterprise tools will also be used to support Cash Gifting. In the event there is fraud, Cash App will manage the investigation, resolution, etc.
Can velocity limits be put in place? (i.e: Customer can only purchase 2 Best Buy gifts in a 30 day period)
Yes, Cash App can assess merchant-specific velocity limits but will need to assess it on a merchant-bymerchant basis. We can also consider offering discounted commission to merchants that want to throttle velocity due to internal budget constraints.
Is there a minimum/maximum denomination a user is allowed to gift?
Will denominations be set or variable, i.e. only in $5 increments or can you gift $23.25?
This follows Cash App P2P – Minimum is $1 and yes, you can gift including cent increments.
What happens if gifted balance remains unspent after a certain period of time?
At this time, the gifted balance will remain owned by the recipient. The current integration of this product does not contemplate breakage. We’re open to adjustments in the next iteration.
When in the funds flow will a merchant be billed for the agreed upon distribution?
Merchants will only be billed at the time of redemption. For example, with a 5% distribution rate, if a user is gifted $100, but only spends $50 in one transaction, merchant would be billed $2.50.
What happens if a user is approved for a purchase, but then doesn’t have the funds available once transaction is settled, i.e. user is gifted $100, spends this at participating merchant, but final authorization is for more than pre-authorized amount (hotel, restaurant), etc.?
Transactions including Gift Card balances can be supplemented with Cash App Balance. In the case that even the Cash Balance can’t cover the final settled amount, the customer will go into negative balance. This is a common Cash Card occurrence and customers are brought back into positive balance through messaging and other mechanisms. Gift Cards and merchants will not be affected by this process.
How will multiple users be managed, i.e. authorized minors, supplemental accounts? If I send a user a gifted value, but then another authorized user on the account uses the Cash Card at a participating merchant, will it use the gifted value?
Cash App does not have an authorized user account constriction. We have a family product that allows guardians/parents to authorize teen accounts to have a VISA Cash Card, but balances and gift cards are never shared across accounts.
Can a user have more than one Cash App account allowing for a self-gifting scenario?
No What is the mechanism Cash App segments the merchant? We use a proprietary algorithm to group merchants under a single entity, which relies on MCC and other merchant data. This is what allows us to cleanly group merchants in app and properly execute Gift Card transactions.
