Reading

Please continue to read with, read to, listen to and read in front of your child. Reading is the most valuable form of homework and all of these activities will help your child to learn to read and to learn from reading. Where possible please try and use actual reading books, rather than online books to keep the children familiar with reading books.

Reading activities:

  • Read to someone

  • Read to self

  • Write sentences about each book that is read

  • Discuss what you have read with your family

  • Read different types of books/reading material (newspapers, magazines)


READING PROMPTS:

Before reading:

  • What do the pictures tell you about the text?

  • What do you already know about this topic?

  • What are you hoping will happen in this book?

  • Without reading, flick through the book and think about what it will be about based on the pictures?

  • What do you think you are going to learn from this text?

  • Where do you think the story is taking place?

  • Is this a fiction or non-fiction text?

  • What does the front cover tell you about this text?

  • Have you read any books that relate to this book?

During reading:

  • What can you tell about the story so far?

  • What is going to happen next? How do you know?

  • What questions do you have about the text?

  • Does that part of the text remind you of anything?

  • What words could you use to describe the characters?

  • What is the problem in the text?

  • What was the solution to the problem?

  • What have you learnt so far?

After reading:

  • What did you learn from this text?

  • Have you read other texts like this?

  • What do you understand now that you didn't understand before you read this text?

  • What would you change about the story?

  • What was the most important part of the story?

  • What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story?

  • How could you change the ending of the story?
