Sms Cross Country

Stay positive. Work Hard. Encourage Others.

Off-Season News

Winter Running Workouts are continuing to take place on Tuesdays (3-4 PM). We meet my the abe Lincoln statue after school.

SMS Track & Field will begin in late March. Consider joining and running a distance event (Mile & 800 meter run) if you liked cross country. Note, Coach Hames is the distance coach for the track team and approaches training in a similar way to cross country.

Off-Season Races: It's been great to see runners at some off-season races! For those interested, there is a winter 5K in Geneva on Super Bowl Sunday morning.

About Cross country

Cross country is both a team and an individual sport. Competing runners race on open-air natural terrain, such as dirt or grass. Each course might look a little different, but in middle school, all of these races will be 2 miles. At the end of the race, teams are scored by adding the placements of their top 5 runners - hence, the lowest score wins! Runners will learn to pace themselves and improve throughout the season.

On our team, we have 3 rules. First, stay positive. Second, work hard. And third, encourage others. We believe these rules are fundamental in being able to improve as a runner and person. Aside from that, we want our runners to build a mental and physical appreciation for the sport of running!
