To the left, you will see a copy of our classroom rules and expectations. Each year during the first week of school I go over and set expectations for the classroom. After I do that, the class works together to brainstorm some more ideas or more specific rules that we can follow within our classroom. The poster is broken up into three categories: What our classroom should look like, sound like, and feel like. All throughout the year we refer back to this poster so that everyone knows and remembers the rules and expectations that we set together in September. Making students a part of the rule-making process helps them to remember not only what the rules are but also why we chose them together in the first place.
Another classroom management strategy that I use in the classroom is "Walter's Way". All throughout Walter Hill, we follow "Walter's Way". "Walter's Way is the acronym "RRECH" and what that stands for is Respect, Responsibility, Effort, Choices, and Honesty. All of these attributes are what our students work towards and strive for day in and day out. In class if you are "caught" showing one of these things and really setting a great example of one of these characteristics you earn that letter for the week. Once the class earns all of the letters in the acronym we "spin for snacks" on Fridays. I spin a wheel with everyone's name on it and pick 2 winners each week.
