Positive Behavior Support in Schools
PBSIS, or Positive Behavior Support in Schools, is an evidence-based program that supports students' behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. More information on how PBSIS is used at Harker can be found here.
In our ESL Classroom, clear expectations and rules are set from the beginning of the year to ensure students understand what is and is not conducive to learning in the classroom. Behaviors that are encouraged are rewarded both through verbal recognition and through a weekly prize incentive system. Learning in our classroom is tailored to the small group's needs and to the individual, which encourages maximum engagement throughout the class. Our classroom is a community- participating in group discussions and being respectful of others' thoughts and feelings is positively reinforced both verbally and through our incentive system. This community is celebrated and reinforced through our ESL Family Nights.
