Moments in Time [Narratives] - It is important that children see themselves reflected in the stories they read. They can see other worlds and how they match up or don’t match up to their own. They need to see futures for themselves that they may not otherwise have imagined.
In this unit, students will write small moment stories from their own lives and experiences. They may be interviewing family members and friends to gain insight into their family history. They may take experiences or author styles from a read aloud and turn it into their own. They will also be reading and listening to diverse stories read aloud to them that reflect different cultures, people, and situations.
Each lesson will typically include a small group discussion/check in, a mini lesson that focuses on a specific writing skill, and then time to write.
