Welcome to 2nd Grade!
Welcome to 2nd Grade!
Hi! My name is Mrs. Kelley and I am super excited to be your child’s second grade teacher this year along with Mrs. McIntire! This is my sixth year teaching, and I've taught second grade for five of those years. I graduated from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) with a dual major in Elementary Education and Psychology.
Some facts about me:
I live in Mickleton with my husband, Brendan, and we got married in July of last year. I am a triplet, which means both of my siblings are the same age as me! Also, I am the third generation to teach 2nd grade in my family after my mom (a former SWSD teacher) and grandma. Some of the things I enjoy are trying out new recipes, reading, going to concerts, and going to the beach with my family.
My goal:
I am here to ensure that your child looks forward to coming to school each day and gains the confidence in themself to go beyond their comfort zone and expand their mind. Please feel free to reach out to me (mkelley@swsdk6.com) or Mrs. McIntire with any questions and/or concerns. We know this will be a fantastic school-year!

Dear parent(s)/guardian(s),
Here is a note regarding our classroom management program. As a teacher, my role
is to teach your child. I LOVE that role. I want our classroom to be a place
of learning, and I strive to make sure all students in my classroom have an opportunity
to learn. In order to create a classroom environment conducive to learning, it is
imperative that our classroom management program is in place and supported by
you at home.
Our classroom rules are as follows:
1. Listen and follow directions
2. Use hand signals and stay on task
3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself
4. Respect your classmates, school, and teacher
Every time a classroom rule is broken, a consequence is given.
Our classroom consequences are as follows:
1. Redirect (serves as a verbal reminder)
2. Side Line (temporary movement to a different area in classroom)
3. Think Time (time at small group table to fill out a reflection note)
4. Letter Home (letter home to parent that must be signed and returned)
The first thing I want you to know is that a redirect is not a bad thing. In my class, a
redirect acts as the first reminder/warning. These will be more common at the beginning
of the school-year. For example, if your child is talking when I’m teaching, I will give them
a redirect instead of giving them a reminder to stop. I find that by doing this, behavior
starts to change immediately, because they know I will be consistent the first time and
every time. For a side line, the student will be moved to a different spot in the room for a
few minutes, while continuing to participate, and then will return to their original spot.
In order to build and maintain trust with all students, I will be as consistent as possible.
I also want you to know that behavior is learned and can be changed. Children’s brains
are so moldable. I expect all students to adhere to our classroom rules and rise to meet
our classroom expectations. It is imperative that these rules are followed so I can
preserve a positive classroom environment and give all students access to learning.
If you have any questions or would like more details, I’m happy to send you the student
presentation I will be using to teach students or answer any questions you may have.
I am so excited to teach your child this year! It’s going to be wonderful!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kelley :)
