The Paws Therapy Project is an exciting partnership with a local rescue. Our class acts as fosters to puppies. The children help socialize and care for the puppies until they find their forever homes. In return, the puppies will offer the children unconditional love and lots of snuggles. While caring for the puppies, the children learn responsibility and gain an understanding of the importance of service and the joy it can bring them, as well as others. Research shows the simple act of petting a dog has the effect of lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Puppy therapy also lowers stress hormones, like cortisol, and increases oxytocin. The reduced feelings of anxiety enables children to focus on learning. Can you envision your children learning reading or math skills while cuddling a puppy?
The children also have the opportunity to be Ambassadors for The Paws Therapy Project by introducing puppies to the Harker School on the morning announcements, help promote and collect supplies from the Puppy Supply Wish List, and assist with the daily care of the puppies.
The Paws Project would not be possible without community support. While our partner rescue provides us with food and medical are for the puppies, our program has additional needs to provide the best for both the puppies and our students. Check out our Amazon Wish List link below.
