This year, I would like to have a couple different class pets for all of us to enjoy. During the first week of school, I want to hear some ideas that you all have. Who should our new Class Pet be?? Ladybugs? Praying Mantis? Ants? Fish?
In the meantime, I want to introduce Class Pet #1 to you all. Drumroll please.....
Everyone say hello to Mosster Rogers (get it?!). He is a marimo moss ball. Marimo (literally "seaweed ball") are not moss at all - they're actually a rare form of spherical algae.
Yes, you read that correctly. We have officially adopted a pet gorilla. Want to learn more? Click here.
March of 2020, we found ourselves stuck at home with little to do. We were lucky enough to have 15 class pets... yes that's right... 15!! When we first met our new little Quarantine Caterpillars (through a Zoom call), they were so tiny and didn't move much. It was so neat watching them grow into beautiful butterflies. Once all of the butterflies were ready to spread their wings and fly, we had a Virtual Butterfly Release Party and let them all go.
The students had daily updates on the butterflies given by Gia, Mrs. Roberto's three-year-old daughter.
1️⃣. We were all so surprised with how quickly these littles grew! All of the students helped name them and had daily Zoom calls with them all.
2️⃣. We knew that when the caterpillars climbed up to the lid and got in their "J" position, that they were getting ready for the next step in their journey.
3️⃣. Once they were all in their chrysalis, they were moved to their temporary habitat.
4️⃣. After emerging into beautiful butterflies, they remained in Mrs. Roberto's house for three days to eat all of the oranges and to get big and strong! Mrs. Roberto, Gia, and Enzo released all of the butterflies and watched them all fly away!
