The Southwest Public School System is a consolidated district that covers approximately 650 square miles of Red Willow, Frontier, and Furnas Counties. A highly qualified and dedicated staff works with the 290 students of the Southwest Public School District. This staff has designed and implemented curriculum that aligns with the State Standards. The district’s student assessment process includes a system of ongoing classroom assessments, NSCAS Growth reading, math, and science, and MAP Growth as a nationally normed referenced test. To complete the assessment process, the 11th graders take the ACT. These assessments provide the staff with information to review and revise the curriculum providing our students with a learning environment that will assist them throughout life. District 179 is accredited by the Nebraska Department of Education.
Student Membership
In our small school the enrollment for students peaked in the year of 2017-2018. The enrollment dipped down in 2019-2020, but increased this past year. Over the past ten years our enrollment has decreased from mid 300s to high 200s.
Student Race and Ethnicity
We have had an increase in student membership by race and ethnicity.
Highly Mobile
We had a year of influx in 2018-2019 but leveled out since.
Teachers
We are blessed to have experienced teachers. We have increased the number of full-time teachers over the past few years. The ethnicity of all of our teachers is white. Both our percentage of teachers with masters degree and our average salary is below the state average.
English Language Learner
Southwest has a small population of EL students but are able to have two staff members who are endorsed in ELL. We have utilized staff that has ELL endorsements as well as the ESU to help supplement curriculum for English Language Learners.
Free Reduced Lunch
Southwest averages above the state average for free and reduced lunch.
High Ability Learners
High ability learners have been comparitivly the same as the state. This past year we did lose a large class with high ability learners.
Special Education
The majority of our students are of white ethnicity. Our second-largest ethnic group is Hispanic students. Our student's mobility rate is slightly higher than the state mobility rate most years. We also do offer preschool and kindergarten for our students. We do not have many ELL students. Our students' free and reduced lunch percentage is higher than the state level and ranges between 45% and 50%. Our High Ability Learner percentage varies from above and below the state average. Our Special Education percentage is slightly lower than the state average with our average ranging from 11.6% and 14.2%.
Attendance
Overall we have stayed about the state average on attendance. We continue to connect with out students and parents on the importance of attendance.
School Mobility Rate
College Going Rate
Our attendance rate is almost the same as the state rate. Our school mobility rate is higher then the state average ranging from 4.00% to 12.45%. We have at least 70% of our students attending college after they graduate. More of our students attend 2 year over 4 year colleges.
