Our library’s mission is to provide students with opportunities and resources to become lifelong learners. Our aim is to make every Viking a reader!
Mar Vista Academy library is a space where all students are welcome to learn and collaborate. It is a supervised space open to all students for tutoring beginning at 7:30am and after school for tutoring until 4:20 pm. During nutrition break and lunch time it is a place for students to quietly complete work, read, play games or socialize. Students must maintain an environment that is respectful of all students using the space. During class, it is also a place for students to work independently or collaboratively.
Students must be respectful of the space at all times:
Please enter the library quietly and calmly
Be courteous to other students and faculty members using libraries spaces
Be seated at a table or chair: 4 students per table maximum.
No eating or drinking the library - covered drinks, or water bottles are allowed
Use furniture as intended
Minimize physical contact
Use computers and printers for school work only
If you remove a book from a shelf and you decide you don’t want it, put it on the reshelving cart. We will put the books away.
Keep library clean:
Throw away trash
Don’t write on tables
Put books, games & library materials where they belong after using them.
Students who do not follow the rules will be reminded of the expectations. If students have to be reminded multiple times, they may lose library privileges for a time period.
As your school librarian, I am committed to maintaining our library's resources and district assets, including books, textbooks, and electronic devices, to ensure their availability to all students. To keep things running smoothly, I’d like to share our policies on overdue, lost, and damaged items and the procedures for handling unpaid debts.
Checking Out:
Once an asset is checked out by staff, the student is responsible for the same asset-tagged item to be returned when requested, usually at the end of enrollment at MVA/SUHSD. Teachers are not responsible for the materials left in classrooms, nor is it recommended for students to keep items in class as materials frequently get misplaced.
Overdue vs. Lost Items:
For library books, there are no daily late fees for overdue items. Books are checked out for a 28-day period, after which a five-day grace period applies. If a book is not returned or renewed within this grace period, it is marked as lost, and a replacement charge is applied. To clear any debt, the book must be returned or renewed (if there are no reservations on it), or the replacement cost paid.
Any item that remains checked out beyond its due date for textbooks and class novels is marked as lost, and a replacement charge is issued. This charge is cleared when the item is either returned or the cost is paid for any lost or damaged item.
Items are considered lost if they are not returned within the grace period or if a student or parent notifies us that the item is lost. Replacement costs reflect the current price required to replace the item including barcodes and labels to make them “shelf ready”.
Damaged Items:
An item is considered damaged if it is no longer in a condition to be checked out due to rips, tears, water damage, ink stains, or other forms of fluid damage. The full replacement cost must be paid if an item requires repair or is too damaged to be used.
Payment Information:
Lost or damaged item debts can be paid directly to the library staff, in cash only. We cannot accept textbooks and course materials that some may purchase from various vendors including Amazon, eBay, Barnes and Noble, due to varying editions published and frequently those materials coming from other districts. If an item is found after payment, a refund can be issued, and the district will dispense it.
Water causes damage and mold growth. Please keep your books away from liquids.
Eating in the library attracts pests like cockroaches and rodents. Help keep the library clean by not eating in the library.
While stickers are fun, they don't belong on iPads. You can put things under the cover. But, please don't stick anything on the iPad or cover. No drawing or carving into the iPad.
