Curriculum overview

KS3

Year 8 students are allocated a second language. Our challenging, supportive and engaging approach to MFL developed in Year 7 French continues in German, in line with research-based best practice resources   from our former lead school status with the National Centre for Excellence in Language Pedagogy - NCELP (Now Language-Driven Pedagogy).  The core elements of phonics, vocabulary and grammar are taught and consolidated through meaningful practice, so that students can listen to, read, speak and write Spanish in a broad range of contexts using high frequency vocabulary. Year 8 also extend their Spanish language and cultural knowledge in a range of different contexts from extra-curricular Spanish themed activities through to exploration of cultural features within the language, national events and famous places.

KS4

All students study at least one language at GCSE. In Year 9, the curriculum is enhanced with online links with our partner school and opportunities to exploit language learning through authentic links. GCSE key themes on identity and culture, local, national and international areas of interest, plus current and future study and employment are studied in Years 10-11, through which students enhance not only their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, but also their understanding of an international view of the world, opening the door to further study and careers potential.  Students also have the valuable opportunity to develop cultural knowledge and empathy as we embrace geography, history, customs and traditions, offered both on the curriculum and through trips and an exchange visit.

KS5

Spanish A level builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding gained at GCSE. With a focus on language, culture and society, both historic and current, the course fosters many transferable skills including communication, research skills, critical thinking and creativity. The course suits students who wish to expand their linguistic and cultural horizons, who may wish to live or work abroad, or who wish to pursue further study in languages. There are rich opportunities for studying Spanish at university, either on its own or as a complement to virtually any other subject. Universities recognise that communication skills in a foreign language are a huge asset for a large number of careers, including journalism, politics, law, science, engineering, business and the tourism industry.
