I am an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Swarthmore College. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BA in Philosophy and Classical Studies. I completed my PhD at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. My areas of expertise include philosophy of emotion, moral philosophy, history of philosophy, and political philosophy. Some of my publications appear in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, European Journal of Philosophy, Kantian Review, and The Monist. You can find my publications on PhilPapers.

I am the author of two books Naked: The Dark Side of Shame and Moral Life, (Oxford University Press, 2018) and Dancing with the Devil: Why Bad Feelings Make Life Good (Oxford University Press, forthcoming). 

I have written for public outlets, such as the Philadelphia Inquirer, Teen Vogue, and Aeon Magazine. I have been interviewed by NBC News, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN. I am also a contributor at Psychology Today.

In my non-philosophy life, I am a runner, a dog person, a metal head, a sports nut, and a home chef. I am married to the fiction writer W. Scott Thomason.
