What is Writer’s Workshop?

* Mini-lesson (5 - 10 minutes)

A short lesson focused on a single topic

that students need help with.

��*Writing Time(10 - 15 minutes or more!).

The students WRITE! Each student will try out the mini-lesson in his or her writing. I will conference with individual students or small groups.

* Share (5 minutes)

Writers read what they have written and seek

feedback from their audience.

Opinion Writing

Rhetoric - Writing or speaking well to persuade your opinion.

Three types:

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

Ethos

is an appeal to trustworthiness, and it is a means of convincing someone that the character of the persuader is trustworthy.

Pathos

is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response.

Logos

is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason.

5 Paragraph Essay

Paragraph 1 - INTRODUCTION:

Paragraph 2, 3 & 4 - BODY (3 of them to match your thesis! BING - BANG - BONGO):

  • Topic sentence (Introduce your main point from your thesis statement)
  • Evidence and details to support your thesis topic in at least 3 sentences
  • Conclusion sentence (wrap up your paragraph)

Paragraph 5 - CONCLUSION

  • RESTATE your hook
  • RESTATE your thesis
  • Give a FINAL thought

Dialogue Rules

  • Use quotation marks pointing inward to show who is talking
  • If you change the speaker you MUST change the paragraph and indent
  • Always use punctuation before quotation
  • Capitalize the start of the quotation, but use a lower case if the sentence is broken up (For example: “I really don’t know,” he said, “whether she loves me or not.”)
  • Use speaker or dialogue tags to show who is speaking
  • SAID is DEAD! (Use better word choice!)

An interjection shows excitement or emotion. It is a part of speech that is separated in a sentence by an exclamation point or a comma if the emotion is not as strong.
