Dear Parents,
Thank you for partnering with me to make your child an even better reader! As we know practice makes perfect. The more literacy rich opportunities we can provide for your child, both in school and at home, the better! It is important that reading becomes a part of your child's daily routine. Below I have included a few ways to help your child at home. Please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss your child's progress or ways we can work together to make this process easier. I look forward to a productive school year!
Happy Reading,
Dr. Hedges
What you can do at home:
- Ask questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how?
- Discuss the problem in the story
- Identify the most important facts in a nonfiction text
- Stop to determine the meaning of an unknown word
- Direct your child to use picture clues, captions, bold text etc. to help with comprehension
- Encourage your child to reread which will develop comprehension, fluency and accuracy
- Model reading for pleasure and for information
- Take turns and share the reading experience together
- Make books available, visit your library to provide a variety of titles to select from
- Most importantly, make reading a part of your regular routine!
