Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin, the first person to go to space and circle the Earth, spoke these first words in orbit, “The craft is operating normally. I can see Earth”. English and Russian are the official languages on the International Space Station. Technically, all astronauts have to be able to communicate in either language, but there are also always interpreters on site at Johnson Space Center in Houston. English is the only language to have been spoken on the moon
(so far!).
