This year, for optional summer reading, Swampscott Middle School is recommending a family read of The Amazing Generation by Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price. This book is a practical and engaging guide designed for middle schoolers to help them understand and break free from smartphone dependency. Most importantly, it empowers kids to rebel against the tech giants, by arming them with information about big tech's addictive strategies so that they can build their lives around meaningful real world experiences.
Additionally, there is a list of titles continuing to highlight diverse authors and experiences through book choices. At Swampscott Middle School, we want to embrace and celebrate differences, promote inclusivity, and empower our students to be a positive force in our world.
Each book on the book list is hyperlinked to the publisher’s website, which provides a summary of the text. Most books can be found within the public library’s NOBLE network, which can be accessed at noblenet.org. Additionally, many books are available in free audio formats and ebooks via the public library using the Libbyapp. (Books may also be purchased from Amazon or other book retailers. It is not required that families purchase books.) Instructions for how to use the Libby app can be found HERE.
Students reading the same book as their friends or peers as a “book club” is strongly encouraged! Additional information, including optional enrichment activities, can be found on this website. If students choose to read, reading should be completed by the first day of school. Happy Reading and have a safe and wonderful summer!
