"Think Like A Mathematician, Not A Calculator"
I hope you are as excited as I am to begin our year long exploration into 5th grade math. We will be using HMH Into Math by Houghton Mifflin and Envision Math by Scott Foresman for curriculum programs. I will employ whole class, small group, and individual activities throughout the year to help students learn new math concepts.
Units of Study
1. WHOLE NUMBERS: Understanding place value, number forms, and powers of 10. Learning to multiply and divide by multiples of 10, 100, or 1,000 mentally. Learning to multiply 2 by 2 digit, 3 by 1 digit, 3 by 2, 4 by 2 digit, and 3 by 3 digit problems using the standard algorithm. Learning to divide by 1, 2, and 3 digit divisors into 3 and 4 digit dividends.
2. OPERATIONS & ALGEBRAIC THINKING: Write and interpret numerical expressions. Analyze patterns and relationships.
3. FRACTIONS: Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators - includes simplifying.
4. DECIMALS: Understanding place value to the thousandths place. Understanding how to compare and order decimals. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals using standard algorithms.
5. MEASUREMENT & GEOMETRY: Learning to differentiate between different types of quadrilaterals. Calculating the volume of rectangular prisms and composed figures. Graphing points on a coordinate plane. Convert measurements within a given measurement system.
Homework Policy
In order to promote success, it is important that each 5th grade student be accountable for their homework. Typically a small amount of homework is assigned Monday-Thursday to review/reinforce the lessons taught that day in the classroom. There will never be homework over the weekends or after an assessment. Student's homework grade each term will be based on completing assignments and the effort extended – not the number of correct answers. If you are absent from class, you are responsible for meeting with the teacher upon your return to see what work was missed. We will work with any student who is out sick to get them caught up. A signed note from home is expected for any other missed assignments with the expectation that work will be made up the following day.
Tests 100 points (2 quiz grades)
Homework will consist of daily assignments and/or uncompleted classwork and will count for 1 quiz grade at the end of each term
Test corrections can be made after any assessment if student scored below a 75% to earn points back to their grade. Re-tests are offered only for serious, extenuating circumstances.
Please have parents/guardians initial all tests as they come home.
