UPH College Painting Challenge 2023
Written by Ms. Chatrine
We are delighted to congratulate G7 Boyoung for her achievement in the painting competition that was held on February 20th - 24th, 2023 in UPH College. Despite facing tough competition as the youngest participant, her talent and creativity have earned her the Best Favourite Painting (3rd place).
The judge’s feedback mentioned that Boyoung’s painting qualified as first winner but her presentation skills need to be improved. The feedback displayed that Boyoung has exceptional skills and impressed the judges with her unique artistic vision.
With her talent and determination, there's no doubt that Boyoung will achieve even greater achievements in the future. Well done and congratulations again!
RAMADAN FOOD DRIVE AND IFTAR
Written by Ms. Lisa
Ramadan is the holiest month of the year for Muslims worldwide, the month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. It is a time for charity and giving to those in need during this month, and also a time for communities to gather and celebrate the season together.
The SWA community organised a food drive and donated essential groceries such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, cookies, syrup, margarine, and instant noodles, which were packed into boxes to be distributed during the Iftar event. This year's food drive was miraculously blessed with an abundance of donations, which allowed us to share with more people in need.
Ramadan Iftar Event
After two years of not having the Iftar event due to the pandemic, the Parent Association successfully brought the moment of togetherness and blessings by organising the Iftar event for the entire SWA community. The afternoon was well-spent with storytelling, traditional dances, and singing at the amphitheatre. The handover of groceries boxed and a small token of appreciation from SWA Junior Stuco was well-received by the staff and the nearby Maktabul Aitam Orphanage. The day ended with breaking the fast together at the GM building.

All of the donations that were received have been distributed to four orphanages by representatives of parents and students. SWA would like to express gratitude and appreciation to the SWA community, including parents, students, and staff, for making this year's Ramadan very meaningful for both SWA's blue-collar staff and the nearby orphanages.

SHARING IS CARING
Written by Ms. Lisa
The month of Ramadan is a time for giving and caring, inspiring communities to lend a helping hand to those in need. SWA's teacher, Mr. Rajesh, is an excellent example of how small acts of kindness can bring positive impacts to the community. He demonstrated his care and spread blessings by donating groceries to the blue-collar staff in Wisma Indah Kiat's mess.
Mr Rajesh's generosity highlights the importance of supporting those who are often overlooked. His kind gesture not only provides essential groceries but also shows the staff that they are valued and appreciated.
SWA extends its sincere gratitude to Mr Rajesh for his contributions to the community and hopes that his good deeds will inspire others to help those around them. Through small acts of kindness and generosity, we can make a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
Cooking Oil Bazaar and Waqf Al-Qur'an
SWA, in collaboration with other Sinar Mas pillars, held a series of cooking oil bazaars in multiple locations. These bazaars, a regular activity during Ramadan, offer premium packaged cooking oil at a reduced price, making it more accessible to the public. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden that some may experience during the fasting month.
In addition to the cooking oil bazaar, a waqf of 1,000 copies of the Al-Qur'an also took place, supporting the religious needs of the community. These copies will be distributed to mosques and religious institutions, making them readily available for people to use in their religious practices.
FIRST AID TRAINING
Written by Ms. Lisa
Accidents can happen anytime and anywhere. While some situations may be minor, others may be serious and require immediate medical attention. In such cases, knowing how to administer first aid can make all the difference in the world. The purpose of first aid is to provide immediate care to an injured or sick person until professional medical help arrives. First aid can prevent further injury or illness, and it can also save lives. Therefore, it is crucial to have basic first aid knowledge and skills.
Recently, SWA conducted first aid training for all staff and parents, facilitated by the Eka Hospital medical team, to ensure that the community has the necessary skills and knowledge to respond to emergencies at school or anywhere else, including at home.
During the first aid training, participants learn a range of skills, including how to control bleeding, how to stabilize a broken bone, and how to perform CPR. Participants also learn how to assess the situation and hands-on practice with simulation dolls on how to do CPR properly.

The Importance of Understanding The Group Plan (Social Thinking Skills)
Written by Mr. Danny
What is social thinking skill?
Social thinking is the ability to consider your own and others' thoughts, emotions, beliefs, intentions, knowledge, etc. For example, we use expected behaviour to make sure that people have comfortable thoughts about us. If we have unexpected behaviour, people might have uncomfortable thoughts about us.
What is the Group Plan in Social Thinking Skills?
The Group Plan helps children understand what it means to be part of a group, which is different from following one's own plan.
What does it mean to follow the Group Plan?
When you are following the group plan, you are thinking about each other and this makes everyone feel calm and comfortable. In contrast, when you are following your own plan, others would have uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.

SWA LITERACY PROGRAMME
Your partner in building a strong foundation in English literacy skills is here. Join the SWA Literacy Programme! The SWA Literacy Programme features JOLLY PHONICS for ages 3-6. It is a comprehensive programme that employs a child-centred and multisensory approach to teaching the 42 sounds of the alphabet, which motivates children to build words as early as possible.
The programme is also offered to Elementary School students aged 7-11 years old. In this programme, literacy skills, (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), are further developed through exposure to stories of various genres. The language exercises are combined with activities that focus on comprehension skills (eg. summarising, inferencing, comparing and contrasting) that they can apply to all reading situations.
