CONGRATULATIONS
FLL Friendly National Competition 2023
On March 19th, 2023, SWA hosted the FLL Friendly National Competition organized by CK Education. Over 300 students from cities all across Indonesia, from Lampung, Surabaya, to Kalimantan, came to SWA to compete in the event. SWA was buzzing with excitement, and there were so many happy faces ready to take on the challenges.
The FLL (First Lego League) competition is where students work together to build and program a robot using LEGO pieces to complete a series of missions. They also research and develop innovative solutions for real-world problems related to the theme of the competition. This year's theme is "Super Powered". It is a great way for the students to learn about STEM and develop their problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
This year, SWA sent three teams to compete, with two teams in the FLL Explorer category (for ages 6-9) and one team in the FLL Challenge category (for ages 9-19). We're thrilled to announce that SWA Team Explorer A - SWA Kids won the Challenge Solution Award, Team Explorer B - Cheesy Godzilla took home the Team Model Award, and Team Challenge won the Innovative Project Award. Congratulations to the teams!
We wish you the best of luck in the upcoming FLL International Competition in Singapore!

Ice Hockey Competition in Thailand and Singapore
Written by Mr. Dominic
Last January 26-29, 2023, one of our students, Oliver of grade 7, competed in the CMM Thailand Cup 2023. With 20 teams coming from places like Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, and Singapore, Oliver’s team, Silver Monster from Taiwan, bagged the bronze medal in the U12 division. It was a tough tournament and the competition was fierce. But they were to outlast the other 16 teams.
On a more recent note, last February 22 - 25, 2023, the brothers; Maurice of grade 4 and Oliver of grade 7 joined the Singapore Scotiabank Ice Dragons Classic International Ice Hockey Tournament at the JCube Rink in Singapore. A total of 19 teams coming from Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, and Indonesia to name a few joined this prestigious event. Maurice played in the U12 division while Oliver joined both the U12 and U14 division under BADAX Indonesia team. It was a great experience for Maurice as this was his first ever international hockey tournament that he joined. Oliver on the other hand bagged the star of the game in a match against the team from Hong Kong in U12. Oliver’s U14 also won the silver medal in what was an intense match. Congratulations and we are proud of you Oliver and Maurice for representing the SWA Mighty Macan blood in the international stage in hockey.
ECO-EDUCATION THROUGH MANGROVE PLANTING
On March 15th, APP Sinar Mas invited SWA to participate in a mangrove conservation activity. SWA sent out grade 7 and grade 9 students to participate in the event. It was an incredible opportunity for the students to engage in eco-education and eco-tourism, while immersing themselves in the natural beauty of Taman Mangrove Ketapang in Mauk, Tangerang.
Taman Mangrove Ketapang is not just a typical mangrove plantation, it's a must-visit tourist destination. The park offers a stunning jogging track, a boat dock, a charming bridge, and a tranquil plaza nestled within the mangrove forest. During the visit, our students learned about the essential role that mangrove plants play in maintaining the local ecosystem. They also had the opportunity to get their hands dirty and plant mangroves themselves, as well as release horseshoe crabs (Tochipleus) into their natural habitat, where they serve as a bio-indicator of a healthy environment.
Despite the rain pouring down since morning, the students were very excited to hold the crabs and participate in the conservation of the mangroves. It was a remarkable adventure and a priceless learning experience that we're proud to have been a part of.
CARE CORNER

When is the last time you give hugs to your loved ones? It must be quite hard nowadays to get in physical touch as we are required to do physical distancing. However, there’s nothing wrong with knowing how hugs have been giving positive impacts to our brain. A gentle physical touch involves the skin to give signals through the spinal cords to the emotional processing part of the brain. These signals activate the brain to produce hormones such as oxytocin and endorphins which play a big role in increasing the feeling of pleasure, calming and relaxing, reducing stress, and helping to fight-off the infections. You can imagine how a simple and gentle hug from you influences the whole day of your loved ones, especially for your children and teens.
Here are some safe ways in giving and receiving the power of hugs:
Giving a daily dose of hugs to your children and partner every morning and before going to bed. Giving extras during hard times is also recommended.
Doing a routine self-care such as facial skin care, bathing with warm water, massage, or exercise can bring a positive impact, not only to your body but also to your soul.
Hugging a pet: based on numbers of research, hugging a pet increases therapeutic relationships between humans and pets.
Using a body pillow and blanket will give you a sense of warmth, comfort, and relaxation.
Connecting and giving virtual hugs is another safe way that we can do during this time.
So now, let’s start our day with a gentle hug.

SWA LITERACY PROGRAMME
Your partner in building a strong foundation in English literacy skills is here. Join the SWA Literacy Programme! The SWA Literacy Programme features JOLLY PHONICS for ages 3-6. It is a comprehensive programme that employs a child-centred and multisensory approach to teaching the 42 sounds of the alphabet, which motivates children to build words as early as possible.
The programme is also offered to Elementary School students aged 7-11 years old. In this programme, literacy skills, (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), are further developed through exposure to stories of various genres. The language exercises are combined with activities that focus on comprehension skills (eg. summarising, inferencing, comparing and contrasting) that they can apply to all reading situations.
