Greetings, everyone—soon we will be celebrating Chinese New Year, a special time to honour tradition, renewal, and cultural heritage. 2026 is the Year of the Horse. On this wonderful festival filled with bright lights and decorations, there are many ways to send blessings, yet words remain the most timeless way to express good wishes. We wish everyone a happy New Year and great good fortune in the Year of the Horse!
Another meaningful way to appreciate this celebration is by exploring four great classical works of Chinese literature, often known as the Four Great Classical Novels of China. These timeless masterpieces are Dream of the Red Chamber / 紅樓夢 (Hónglóu Mèng), Water Margin / 水浒传 (Shuǐhǔ Zhuàn) , Journey to the West / 西游记 (Xīyóu Jì), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms / 三国演义 (Sānguó Yǎnyì). Each of these works reflects different aspects of Chinese society, values, and imagination.
The first two works offer deep reflections on society and morality. Dream of the Red Chamber presents a detailed portrait of an aristocratic family’s rise and decline, exploring themes of love, fate, social class, and human emotion. In contrast, Water Margin, also called Outlaws of the Marsh or All Men Are Brothers, focuses on brotherhood and justice, telling the story of brave outlaws who unite to resist corruption and oppression. Together, these novels reveal both the elegance and the struggles of traditional Chinese society.
The other two classics emphasise adventure, philosophy, and history. Journey to the West is a legendary tale filled with fantasy and spiritual symbolism, following a monk and his companions on a pilgrimage that represents self-discipline and enlightenment. Meanwhile, Romance of the Three Kingdoms blends history and legend to depict an era of political conflict, highlighting themes of loyalty, strategy, and leadership. Taken as a whole, these four classical works reflect the richness of Chinese culture and embody values that are especially meaningful during the Chinese New Year celebration.
