DUMPLING-MAKING ACTIVITY FOR THE SPRING FESTIVAL
Written by Ms. Kelly
As many of you know, the Spring Festival is one of the most important celebrations for the Chinese community, symbolising family reunions and reconnecting with friends. At SWA, it is part of our tradition to have children learn how to make a traditional dish for the Spring Festival—dumplings!
The process of making dumplings was not easy, but thanks to the incredible support of over 40 parents from the SWA community, we made it happen. On the morning of Thursday, January 23, 2025, we successfully made over 1,000 dumplings!
Parents from all departments and various cultural backgrounds came together for this meaningful event. The experience was so special that many children eagerly asked their parents to participate, truly feeling a sense of belonging at SWA.
A heartfelt thank you to all the parents who joined this wonderful activity! Our children loved the experience, and they are already looking forward to next year’s dumpling-making tradition!
INFANT - MATHS
Written by Ms. Anne-Jill
The Infant Class had an exciting hands-on experience exploring pumpkins! They started by listening to the story Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin, sparking their curiosity about this seasonal fruit. The children then engaged in sensory play, feeling the seeds and pulp inside the pumpkin.
For a fun and messy activity, they made pumpkin mash by squeezing soft, cooked pumpkin with their hands. To support motor development, they hammered sticks into a pumpkin, strengthening their coordination and grip. To reinforce the color orange, the little ones played with orange food, pretending to make delicious pumpkin soup. What a fantastic way to learn through play!
NURSERY - UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD
Written by Ms. Mary-Ann
The theme for this term in Understanding the World is farm animals. The students enjoyed listening to the story Mrs. Wishy-Washy, where they pretended to wash farm animals like a duck, a cow, and a pig, just as Mrs. Wishy-Washy did in the story.
As part of their learning experience, the students created a barn to house these animals, serving as their shelter during bad weather. While exploring the characteristics of farm animals, the children also imitated their movements during an animal movement activity on the big soccer field. It was a fun-filled session where they strengthened their legs and improved their balance through engaging movements.
To make the experience even more exciting, the students climbed a hill, just like goats grazing their way to the top. They ran, hopped, galloped, trotted, and waddled, making it a memorable farm adventure filled with learning and laughter.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN - PE
Written by Mr. Victor
In our recent PE class, Pre-K students practised tossing and catching a ball with a partner. They learned to throw with control and catch with ready hands to build confidence and coordination. To help with teamwork, they called out their partner’s name before passing the ball, making sure the receiver was ready. Some needed extra time to remember this step, but with practice, they improved. We look forward to more fun skill-building in the coming weeks!
K1 - LITERACY
Written by Ms. April
Building Strong Readers
In K1, students are developing key literacy skills through phonics activities like segmenting words, reading sight words, and practising simple sentences.
Segmenting Words: Understanding Sounds
Students are learning to break down words by identifying beginning, middle, and ending sounds. Using pictures and letters, they practise matching sounds to letters, such as breaking cat into /c/, /a/, and /t/. This hands-on approach strengthens their decoding skills.
Sight Words: Boosting Fluency
Children are also memorising high-frequency sight words like the, it, and is, which are essential for fluent reading. Through repetition and fun games, students are building recognition and improving reading confidence.
Parental Support: Key to Success
Parent involvement is crucial. Practising sight words and reading at home greatly supports children’s literacy development and fosters independence.
Looking Ahead
As K1 students continue to develop their phonics skills, they are becoming confident, independent readers. With practise in the classroom and support at home, they are on their way to reading success!
K2 - MUSIC
Written by Ms. Melissa
The K2 music class is currently learning how to perform a simple ensemble as part of their music lessons. They were introduced to the song "Gently Sleep", which they practise in small groups with different musical roles. Some students are responsible for playing the melody on the xylophone, while others contribute to the overall musical texture by playing the triangle. Additionally, another group maintains a steady rhythmic pattern by performing an ostinato using the castanet.
Alongside their ensemble practice, the students also learn to read and recognise musical notes through solfege (do-re-mi). They practise singing the notes in sequence and develop their pitch recognition skills. This approach not only helps them understand melody and pitch relationships but also strengthens their ability to follow music visually and aurally.
Through these activities, the students improve their coordination, listening skills, and teamwork as they play together in a group. They also develop a sense of rhythm and musical expression while gaining confidence in performing with different classroom instruments.

GRADE 4 - ARTS
Written by Ms. Adel
Our grade 4 students have been diving into the world of mixed media on paper, creating stunning pieces inspired by Claude Monet’s Garden. This project encourages students to explore the expressive possibilities of combining different materials while developing essential artistic techniques.
Using the oil pastel resistance drawing technique, students first sketched and outlined their compositions, creating bold, textured elements that would later resist watercolor. They then applied the watercolour blending technique, carefully layering colours to achieve the soft, dreamy transitions reminiscent of Monet’s Impressionist style. The result? Beautifully vibrant landscapes that capture the essence of nature, light, and movement.
Through this activity, students honed their artistic skills and deepened their appreciation for Impressionism and the power of colour in storytelling. Their masterpieces reflect a wonderful blend of creativity and technique—just as Monet himself once envisioned.
GRADE 5 - PSD
Written by Mr. Danny
We are excited to share that our Grade 5 students have been diving into an important topic this term: the value of study skills and how they can enhance learning and academic achievement. Through engaging lessons and activities, students have been exploring various study techniques, such as time management, note-taking, active reading, and goal setting. These skills are not only essential for their current academic journey but also lay a strong foundation for future success.
As part of their learning, students will present their findings on different study skills they’ve researched as a group. They will also reflect on which strategies work best for them and create a personalised plan to implement these skills in their daily routines. This hands-on approach encourages self-awareness and empowers students to take ownership of their learning.
We encourage you to ask your child about their chosen study skills and support them as they put these strategies into practice at home. Together, we can help our students build habits that will benefit them throughout their educational journey and beyond.
