Celebrating Independence Day at Sinarmas World Academy: A Day of Unity and Tradition
Written by Mr. Ahmad
Every year, on the 17th of August, Sinarmas World Academy comes alive with vibrant colours of red and white, as the school community gathers to celebrate Indonesia's Independence Day. This year was no exception, as students, parents, academic staff, and business personnel joined hands to commemorate this significant day through a memorable event filled with a heartwarming ceremony and exciting traditional games.
The event began with a solemn and proud ceremony led by the diligent Grade 11 students and Grade 8 Choir Team. These students took on the roles of flag troop officers, demonstrating remarkable collaboration and dedication. With an air of harmony and “khusu”, they unfurled the national flag and led the audience in the national anthem, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made by countless individuals to secure the nation's freedom. The students' exemplary teamwork and respect for the occasion set the perfect tone for the day's festivities.
Following the ceremony, the atmosphere shifted from reverence to exuberance as the school community engaged in a series of traditional Indonesian games. The courtyard buzzed with excitement as participants of all ages took part in games that have been passed down through generations. These traditional games are not only enjoyable but also carry deep cultural significance, fostering a sense of belonging and unity within the community.
The Engrang Segitiga, a game of balance and coordination, brought smiles and laughter as participants attempted to walk on triangular stilts. The giggles and cheers of children and adults alike filled the air, creating an atmosphere of shared joy and camaraderie. The Bakiak game added an element of thrill and friendly competition. Participants navigated the challenge of walking on wooden clogs, striving to reach the finish line without losing their balance. Laughter erupted each time someone stumbled, turning the game into a lighthearted spectacle that encouraged teamwork and support.
The traditional games were more than just recreational activities; they fostered connections between students, parents, academic staff, and business personnel. Regardless of age or background, everyone participated with enthusiasm. These games served as a reminder that the spirit of unity and togetherness can overcome any challenges, echoing the very ideals upon which the nation was founded. The Independence Day celebration at Sinarmas World Academy had accomplished more than just entertainment – it had reinforced the values of teamwork, cultural heritage, and unity that lie at the heart of the school's community.

Early Years
Amidst the tranquil morning ambience, the vibrant sounds coming from within the Koi building ushered in a spirited atmosphere. Teachers, students, and parents were poised to commemorate Indonesia's 78th Independence Day with fervour.
We kicked off the celebrations with our Indonesian Independence Day with a Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, 17th August 2023. Our kindergarten 2 children as ceremonial officers are ready in their designated positions prepared to lead the ceremony. All students and parents stood up together to salute the flag and sing the National Anthem. The flag hoisting was followed by the reading of ‘Pancasila’, the five principles of the Indonesian state, by one of our Kindergarten 2 students.
Our ceremony was followed by traditional games usually played during Independence Day. Our parents and their children spent quality time together, playing games together. Traditional games such as carrying a small ball on a rice scoop, racing flag, rolling tank and arranging the Indonesian island were played. To top it off, it was a fun and memorable day for everyone!
Elementary School
We were so excited to celebrate the Independence Day of Indonesia. There were plenty of activities the students could participate in. Located on the 1st floor of Koi building was a simple but fun activity corner where students learned about Indonesian culture through colouring bookmarks and pictures about the country, tinkering with traditional bamboo tops, etc.
After the flag ceremony, students and parents were gathered for competitions. There were Pencils in the Bottle, Rubik's Cube Relay, and Pass the Water.
The ceremony was closed in the ES Assembly the next day. It was led by three students from Grade 4: Azka, Arin, and Beverly. During the assembly, the winners from the competition were announced. In the end, students raised the Indonesian flag and sang “Hari Merdeka” together.

These visits hold immense significance as they offer students a unique opportunity to connect with real-world success stories directly linked to their academic journey at SWA. Graduates like Rania, Kyra, Tushar, Callista, Howard, Enrico, Meshach, and Tristan, who once walked the same halls and sat in the same classrooms, inspire the new generation of students by showcasing the tangible outcomes of dedication and hard work.

The stories shared by the returning alumni serve as a testament to the institution's commitment to nurturing holistic growth and preparing students for success beyond their academic years. The alumni visits undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of the school's ethos, fostering inspiration, mentorship, and a shared sense of pride among the entire school community.

G6 - G7 PSD - Understanding School Environment
Coming to a new environment must be something that is exciting but also challenging for the new students, including the Grade 6 Students who become middle schoolers for the first time. One of the ways to help them cope with the new situation is by knowing their school environment and how the environment can support their learning process.
On the 2nd week of school, Grade 6 and Grade 7 students did interviews with the people/departments which can help them resolving problems in their school daily basis, such as the Coordinator, MSHS Administration Officers, Nurse, Canteen staff, Shop staff, Librarians and Lobby security guards.
Middle schoolers are pre-teens and teens. They are still developing skills to manage their study, routines as well as their emotions. By experiencing the situations, they will learn faster and have a better understanding of how they can take steps to resolve problems proactively and independently.
