FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Written by Ms. Kelly
On Monday, August 8th, 2022, the EY ES department was overjoyed to welcome, both new, and returning students for the first day of school. Teachers and students were excited to meet over 70 new faces who just joined SWA this academic year.
We are especially proud of the EY students who braved their way through the first day of school. Although some tears were expected during this transition week, the children showed impressive growth in just 5 days. They started sand-digging, running at the playground, visiting the library, singing songs together, and so much more. Our EY teachers not only made sure that everyone was properly briefed on the daily routines and expectations, but also went out of their way to make sure each student felt safe and comfortable. With consistency and hard work at both home and school, we are confident that the EY students will shine this year.
Coming back to face-to-face learning has not been as difficult for the ES students, but there were definitely some positive changes and adjustments too. For instance, like meeting new friends, learning with a bigger group, and exploring new rooms, (especially for the younger lot - the Grade 1 students), just to name a few. The school has just begun, yet the ES is already buzzing with so many fun activities, like talent show auditions, an Independence Day celebration, and Mid-Autumn festival preparations. There is never a dull moment and so many interesting things coming up this term. ES is definitely on a roll!
Congratulations for a successful first week of classes. Week 1 has already been exciting and we all cannot wait to share what the teachers and students have in store. What a great way start to the new academic year!

TODDLER
Written by Ms. Mary-Ann
We are so glad to welcome our Toddlers to school and we wish the children and their parents a wonderful start on their educational journey. Our 1-year-old babies made us all proud as they happily responded to the activities set for them on their first week. They may not utter a word yet to express their excitement, but their reactions and gestures were priceless. While we are celebrating this simple, yet remarkable display of joyful independence, we are thankful to all of you, parents, for being so positive about making these children confident and happy at school.
The start of preschool is a milestone that’s often anticipated with great excitement and joy, but also with lots of crying, uncertainty, and heel digging. Remember to be always positive and believe that these children will make it successfully!
NURSERY
Written by Ms. Mary Ann
A celebration of significant milestones!
We are truly back to school, and it was fascinating and heartwarming seeing the Nursery boys and girls walk to the classroom and play with their friends. The first week was challenging for some to be separated from their mummies and daddies, but we are confident that they will overcome it. In fact, less crying was observed on our third day at school. As they are all adjusting to the new environment, class routines, friends, teachers, sleeping, and waking-up time, we are certain that the crying will soon stop once they are more adjusted, happy, and comfortable with the people around them.
We are looking forward to having a wonderful year as these children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which new skills are learnt and achieved. Thank you, dear parents, for all your support. Your big smiles and your kind cooperation were truly helpful in preparing them for this week.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN
Written by Ms. Ruby
The first week in Pre-K was truly a week full of fun and surprises. The children met their teachers and friends as they participated in various activities. Maths and English times were integrated with music, play, games, and sensory activities that the children enjoyed. They sorted colours, coloured, and listened to different stories during circle and library time. They also enjoyed the soft gym area wherein they crawled, rolled, and played with their new friends in the class.
“Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not luxury. Play is a necessity.” - Kay Redfield Jamison

KINDERGARTEN 1
Written by Ms. Klara
The Kindergarten 1 students are thrilled to be in school! They eased into the first week with lots of exploring, giggling, making new friends, learning, playing, singing, dancing, counting, and so much more. The children seemed so eager to learn this year and since many of them are already friends, the first week was a smooth transition for everyone.
They learnt about the routines and made a class song agreement in the tune of Frere Jacques, "Eyes are looking, ears are listening, our body is calm, voices quiet. This is how we listen, this is how we listen during lesson time."
The K1 students dived right into our All About Me theme and learnt about each other's favourites. They met all their teachers with a smile and participated in different hands-on activities. They even enjoyed their first ICT class, as they used their bodies to form the letters “I. C. T.” The K1s indeed had a week full of fun and learning!
KINDERGARTEN 2
Written by Ms. Diane and Ms. Lorely
The long wait is over to be back at school! Excitement filled the Kindergarten 2 hallway as our dear students paved their way to their classes. These bunch of active and curious learners met their old and new friends, and their teachers. They enjoyed their time together as they danced, played, listened to stories, sang songs, and made beautiful crafts. As they learnt about the routines and rules at school, the K2 students have shown that they have settled well in class. During Maths time, they reviewed counting 1-10. The K2 students also relearnt their letters, Chinese characters, and Science facts. What a productive first week!

GRADE 1
English Language
Written by Mr. Marc
The Grade 1 students are excited and anxious about their grand adventure ahead.
Ready to take on the challenge, the students have already participated in team building activities using teamwork vocabulary like, "you can do it", "do you need help?", and "come join us". Also, G1 marched around the SWA field chanting tongue twisters. For example, "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
They worked hard the first few days of school and are ready for another day of fun, learning and engagement in SWA G1.
GRADE 2
Science
Written by Ms. Shirley
The school has officially started, so the grade 2 students are up and ready! Jumpstart the new lesson with a dance to the tune of, “If animals move”. Then the students identified the organ systems that enable them to move. After that, students worked on their human body systems flip book where they identified the different organ systems.
Each student created their own muscular hand model that enable them to observe and understand how their hands work. Moreover, the Grade 2 students learned which organ systems are working together if they grip or hold something.
GRADE 3

Selamat datang kembali ke sekolah!
In this first week the third graders were having a lot of fun on how to build an invitation sentence. We discussed that the important words needed to make an invitation sentence are “Ayo, Mari, dan Yuk”. The students were given a situation in which they needed to find solutions on how to invite a sad friend to play together. They put together a simple script and after they were finished, they performed their mini-play in front of the classroom. Well done, Grade 3! Ayo, kita lebih semangat lagi belajar Bahasa Indonesia!
GRADE 4
Mathematics
Written by Mr. Christian
As we start a new academic year, students identified their strengths, topics they need to work on and what are their plans to improve. They mentioned their goals to achieve and set a plan to succeed. Truly, a pot of Math goals!
Why is Math important? How do you use numbers in your everyday life? These questions stirred the student's imagination and shared a piece of their mind and opinions about Math. We did Guesstimation and toured school to see that numbers are everywhere!
GRADE 5
Music
Written by Mr. Freddy
The Grade 5 students were excited to start the first Music session of the term and we start with a busy day of preparing their project performance for the coming Mid Autumn Festival. This will be a collaborative project of Music and Chinese Department. It will be a musical poetry performance combined with singing and playing instruments. This year the Grade 5 students will still continue working with their hulusi instrument to develop their hulusi skills to a higher level. Additionally, they will also learn to practice with piano and ukulele instruments. During the first meeting, we learned how to play ukulele in basic skills. The students were very excited even though it was a bit challenging. They learned how to play C Major chord and A minor chord this week and will keep practicing on other new chords in the next meetings. The students learned to strum and develop their rhythm and tempo, and were encouraged to develop independent rehearsal strategy and perseverance. At the end of this week's lesson, they feel happy when they realised that they were finally able to conquer the challenge and managed to play the new 2 chords that they learned in accurate tempo. They are ready to level up with other new chords until they can apply them to accompany their singing.
