WELCOME TO THE SUNSET BAND FAMILY!
You are not just “taking a class” by joining the band program - you are joining a band family that you will have for years to come. I am excited to start making music with all of you!
The instruments offered in Beginning Band are: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion. There is a limited number of students who will be selected for saxophone and percussion. For students who are interested in learning to play oboe or bassoon, it is recommended to start on clarinet and move to oboe or bassoon during 7th grade.
Students who are interested in Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, or French Horn should register for Beginning Woodwinds. Students who are interested in Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, or Percussion should register for Beginning Brass and Percussion.
I want to join band! What do I do?
Plan to attend Instrument Demo Night on Thursday, February 27th from 4-6pm at Sunset Middle School. You'll be able to try each instrument to decide which one you like best! You'll receive your instrument assignment before school lets out for the summer, and Mrs. Hartley will make sure you are put in the correct class.

If you are unable to attend our instrument demo night, email Mrs. Hartley (hartley_madeleine@svvsd.org) to set up an appointment to try the instruments. It is important that you know which instrument you want to play before the school year begins so that we can put you in the right class!
Once you have chosen your instrument, look through the instrument rental vendors and materials & supplies list to start the process of renting your instrument! You need an instrument by the second week of school in August.

Important Dates:
February 27th: Sunset MS Instrument Demo Night!
End of May: Instrument selections for students who attended Demo Night will be sent to incoming band families. Families should verify their placement choices and secure instruments by early August.
Late August: Instruments should be secured by now. We will begin playing instruments during the second or third week of school!
