Enrolling at SVCSD
Our student body consists of students who come from various language and cultural backgrounds. Many of these students require ENL services that provides them with support in learning English as a new language (formerly know as ESL - English as a second language). The initial level of support is established by an interview with our ENL teacher and the use of the NYSITELL. The NYSITELL assessment provides us with the current language proficiency level that the student is starting off with when they enter our district. Based on these results, student will receive integrated (push-in), stand alone (pull-out), or a combination of the two, for support through the school year through our ENL program. Continuation of support is determined at the end of the school year in the spring - April and May - using the NYSESLAT assessment. Parents will receive notice whether child(ren) qualify for services shortly after the NYSITELL is administered and in September after NYSESLAT scores are received by the district.

Kindergarten - 8th grade
Students in these grade levels will receive 180-360 minutes per week of support. The amount is determined by their proficiency level on the NYSITELL and NYSESLAT as described above. When students receive integrated services in their classroom or ELA period (5th-8th grade students), they will have instruction and support from both the classroom teacher and the ENL teacher who work together to provide the student(s) with the appropriate modifications and accommodations for instruction, assignments, and assessments.
When students received stand alone services, they will work directly with the ENL teacher in either a small group or individual session - depending on the number of students. This time will be spent building vocabulary, phonemic awareness skills, as well as reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for academic and social purposes.
