Our Classroom
New Generation Algebra I
We will be using e-Math Instruction. Students will regularly receive about 20 minutes of homework/evening. Students can check their work or work alongside the included videos. Homework should be submitted on Google Classroom. For a specific breakdown of the curriculum please refer to eMath Instruction Written by Kirk Weiler. Students will sit for the New York Regents in June.
Pre-Algebra
We will cover many of the same topics as Algebra students. We will take every opportunity to build mathematical foundations. Please also check the above e-Math link for specific topics to be covered. Information will be covered at a slower pace with built in repetition and guided practice. Students may opt to sit for the Regents in June or take the exam at their allotted time, at the end of their sophomore year. Student readiness will be determined by their performance both in class and on a practice assessment. Most work in Pre-Algebra is done in class. Mrs. Arcuri supports our work 7th period.
Consumer Math
When will students be "consumers of math" in their lifetime? We will define math this year as problem solving as we look at different ways of thinking about a variety of real life situations. Many topics involve money and becoming fiscally responsible: getting a job, planning a budget, financing loans, buying vs. renting a home, buying vs. leasing a car, using and paying off credit card debt...We have the opportunity to look at many situations when math gets real!
It's not all fun and games! Several years ago, I attended a workshop for math teachers across the state that changed my career. The theory was by integrating games of chance, friendly competition and co-operation into the curriculum that success rates and student retention would improve significantly. It has proven to be true time and time again! I am always looking for new ways of integrating interesting ideas to help students learn and remember.
