Class Information

Welcome to fifth grade ELA! Throughout the school year, students will strengthen their skills as readers, writers, and communicators while exploring a variety of engaging texts and writing opportunities.

Writing will be an important focus throughout the year. Students will learn how to plan, organize, draft, revise, and edit several different types of essays, including narrative, informative, and persuasive writing. We will focus on developing clear ideas, supporting those ideas with strong details and evidence, and organizing writing in a way that is meaningful and easy to follow.

Reading will also be a major part of our ELA classroom. Throughout the year, we will read several novels as a class and use them to strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and critical-thinking skills. Students will practice identifying important story elements, analyzing characters and themes, making inferences, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text.

In addition to our reading and writing units, we will continue to build strong foundational ELA skills. Students will work on grammar, sentence structure, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and other language conventions that will help them become stronger and more confident readers and writers.

My goal is to create a classroom where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas, taking risks, and growing as learners. I am looking forward to a wonderful year filled with great books, thoughtful discussions, and lots of opportunities for students to develop their own voices as writers!
