AP/TCCC Dual Credit
Biology
This course is designed to offer a solid foundation in introductory college-level biology and prepare students for the AP Biology Exam, given in May. Additionally, yearlong enrollment in this course offers the opportunity for dual enrollment in Biol 104/105 from Tompkins County Community College (TCCC) as a lab science course.
Students should be prepared for complex science texts and reading, including a minimum of 30 minutes to 1 hour of work outside class each day (about 5-8 hours a week). As a college level course, the amount of material covered as well as the complexity of the topics will be high.
Life science: biology (Regents)
This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the fundamental principles of living systems, aligned with the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS). Students will develop a deep understanding of core biological concepts through the lens of scientific and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts. Topics include, but are not limited to: the structure and function of cells, energy and matter in biological systems (photosynthesis and cellular respiration), genetics and heredity, molecular biology, mechanisms of evolution and natural selection, ecology, and the interdependence of organisms and ecosystems.
Emphasis is placed on inquiry-based laboratory investigations, data analysis, model development, and scientific argumentation. Students must complete a minimum of 1200 minutes of hands-on laboratory experiences, including mandated state laboratory investigations, to be eligible to take the New York State Life Science: Biology Regents Examination at the conclusion of the course.
