Freshman Seminar 

9th graders


Freshman Seminar is designed to help 9th graders navigate through high school as well as planning for their future beyond high school.  This course provides a skill set to students so that they are equipped  to manage expectations through high school and then in the working world  and college.  The Freshman Seminar teachers support students to help them manage the academic rigor and social issues that they will encounter in their lives. Students will learn life skills, study and organizational skills,  time management, and communication skills in order to achieve academic and personal success.  Additionally, this course addresses the social and emotional issues that teens deal with and how to respond to situations in a responsible manner.  This class promotes a positive mind set, perseverance and grit to enhance educational success  and gives students the skills they need to thrive in a workplace.




French 2 

French 2 furthers the study of grammar, vocabulary, and an understanding of the various Francophone cultures through movies, videos, and magazines. Students improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students enhance their reading comprehension skills through short stories, plays, poetry, and print media. 

All students can learn and experience success in a world language.  Second language acquisition provides the vision and skills necessary to be a global citizen. A primary goal of world language education is real-life communication. World language education develops critical thinking skills. World language education develops critical thinking skills as well as 21st Century Skills.

ACTFL Standards: 1. Students will communicate in languages other than English. 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. 1.2 Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. 1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. 2. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures. 2.1. Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied. 2.2. Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied. 3. Students will connect with other disciplines and acquire information. 3.1 Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language. 3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures. 4. Students will develop insight into the nature of language and culture. 4.1 Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. 4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. 5. Students will participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world. 5.1 Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting. 5.2 Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment. 

French 3

French 3 reviews basic grammatical structures and continues the study of grammar, vocabulary, and the various Francophone cultures through movies, videos, and magazines. Students further develop reading comprehension, speaking, and writing skills through short stories, plays, poetry, oral presentations, written exercises, and print and audio/visual media. Students will take the Checkpoint B exam in June.  Sucessful completion of this course and passing the Checkpoint B exam helps students earn an Advanced Regents Diploma.

French 4

French 4 furthers the develpoment of reading, writing, speaking and listening in French.  It includes advanced composition and conversation, explores topics with an emphasis on refining and integrating advanced grammar into daily communication. Emphasis is placed on comprehension of native speakers. Students develop appropriate verb structures, vocabulary, idioms, and cultural understanding necessary for advanced communication.

French 5 

Dual Credit

6 college credits MVCC



French 5 is a French literature course where students read authentic French literature.  This dual credit course earns high school credit as well as 6 college credits through MVCC.   The credits earned are transferable to almost all other colleges.  French 5 consists of French 201 and 202.  They are designed to be a second year college level course, perfecting the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a manner that approaches fluency.  You will speak and write spontaneously on topics that relate to your life and to the short stories, poetry, and cultural articles found in the text.

A primary goal of world language education is real-life communication. World language education develops critical thinking skills. Assessment must reflect the goals and learning targets set forth in this curriculum document. World languages must be part of the core curriculum in 21st Century schools.
