Purpose/Objective:
Given music designed to create a calming environment and a set amount of time, students will be able to produce art and writing that tells the story of what is on their mind.
Directions:
Set a timer for 10 minutes
Play the music on this YouTube Link
Follow the Directions in the Appropriate Grade Level Box...If you have multiple grade level students...Be sure to read each set of directions. They each vary slightly based on grade level cognitive development.
Activity:
While the music plays for 10 minutes, have your child draw a picture of whatever comes to their mind. Avoid giving them prompts or too many directions.
Give them markers, pencils, crayons, colored pencils and a piece of paper.
Tell them their picture can be of whatever the want it to be.
Tell them they must draw for the entire 10 minutes.
Tell them they can use as many or as few writing utensils as they want.
When the timer has a minute remaining, provide them with a "heads up" to start finishing the drawing.
When the timer goes off, ask them if they need a few more minutes to finish their idea and provide the time to them if they say yes.
Keep the music playing.
Have them share their picture with you. Identify and provide 3 affirmations of their work. Avoid offering any corrections or criticism. This is intentional for later activities.
When they are done, have them tell you the story of their picture.
After they share their story, together, write their story down for them and read it.
Your only response to ALL of their sharing should be, "Thank you for trusting me with your work." and "Thank you for sharing this with me."
