Philosophy is a form of humanistic inquiry that aims to helps us understand ourselves, our world, and those with whom we share it. In aiming at these different forms of understanding (of self, world, and other), philosophy belongs to the cultural sciences (Kulturwissenschaften); it thus participates in this vital project alongside, and not before, history, literature, and the arts. This picture of philosophy informs my teaching at every level.
