As members of the research community at the University of Sussex, we both love the work we do and our local Brighton & Hove community. We are therefore very excited to partner with community groups in Portslade to bring science activities into Easthill Park and share our research.
Maybe you imagine scientists as all wearing lab coats or having wild hair? Perhaps you think that we are "crazy smart" or all went to really posh schools? Or maybe you are scared that science is "not for you"?
BUT
We promise that we are pretty ordinary people: we don't know everything, most of us don't wear lab coats, and we all come in a variety of hairstyles.
AND!!!
YOU might have a question which even we can't answer but which you could perhaps answer one day - all it takes is the curiosity to keep asking the right questions. Why not give that a try and come talk to us?
The health of the planet, people, and life around us
Developments in artificial intelligence, robotics, and nano-technology
Human consciousness, perception, and behaviour
Advancements in quantum technology, devices, and computing
Fundamental questions on life, the Universe, and everything
Mathematics and Physical Sciences
From pure maths
to applied statistics
to particle theory
to observational cosmology!
We are interested in how the Universe works and how we can use this understanding to make the world a better place.
Engineering and Informatics
Advancing technology from communication in our pocket to equipment used to save lives and the planet.
We like to build and rebuild to invent new ways to benefit people and the world, or use existing technology in creative ways.
Psychology
You ask your friend, "How are you feeling?" while we ask ourselves how we feel, think, and perceive the world around us.
Our research looks both into the brain and at group behaviour to understand who we are and how are lives may be improved.
Life Sciences
In an ever-changing planet where human, animal, and plant life need to adapt to evolving conditions, we look to nature for answers.
From chemistry to drug discovery to genomics to evolution, we want to maintain the health of the world and its inhabitants.
Supported by local employers, Higher Education Institutions, colleges, professional bodies, STEM communicators, and educators, this free, family-friendly STEM festival offers an action-packed day filled with interactive activities and exhibits to inspire curiosity and creativity.
Hear from researchers themselves about the fun and interesting stuff they get up to, to make new discoveries and do interesting science.
Friendly and accessible talks right by the Brighton i360.

The Lewes STEM Festival is a yearly celebration of all the STEM activity in the local area. 2024's events included a return of the popular STEM Fair on Sunday 17th November and a STEM Speakers Festival on Saturday 16th November.
The STEM Fair has featured live demonstrations from researchers at the Universities of Sussex and Brighton, local charities, and citizen science societies.
An all-inclusive group in Brighton and Hove for anyone interested in the Universe. Every month they host a talk and they frequently pull out their telescope for group stargazing events too - weather permitting. Everyone is welcome and events are free.
A place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants, and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.
Event dates are held throughout the country, including Brighton.
Bluedot is a music, science, and culture event held annually at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, England, combining music, live science experiments, expert talks, and immersive artworks. This is an opportunity to explore new and unique collaborations between science, music, and the arts.
The event has run since 2016, and took a "fallow year" in 2024 but should be back for 2025.
