Local Alternative Assessments

Local Alternative Assessments

Local alternative assessment are required in the areas of Grade 3 History and Science, Grade 5 writing, and US History for school divisions.  This requirement is the result of the eliminated Standards of Learning assessments in Grade 3 History, Grade 3 Science, Grade 5 Writing, United States History to 1865, and United States History: 1865 to the Present as part of the  2014 General Assembly.  The purpose of the local alternative assessment is to ensure school divisions continue to assess student academic achievement.

Additional information about Local Alternative Assessments can be found on the Virginia Department of Education's website.

Student performance on local alternative assessments will be communicated to parents/guardians via the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Local alternative assessment samples will also be available at Open House and during Parent-Teacher conferences held throughout the school year.

Balanced Assessment Plans

Surry County Public Schools developed a Balanced Assessment Plan for the content areas and courses requiring local alternative assessments. IA copy of the Balanced Assessment Plan is maintained in the Assessment office.
