May 1st is a chance for unified action between labor unions and social justice organizations at the very culmination of Trump’s first 100 days in office. Over 100 labor unions and community organizations have come together to plan actions in locations across the country. It’s an opportunity to show up in force in opposition to Trump’s authoritarian regime and his billionaire cronies who uphold his unpopular policies, and who are doing everything they can to keep us divided.
As SURJ, it’s an opportunity to organize white people into solidarity with our Black and Brown neighbors, and away from the rich, white elite – because we all deserve to live dignified lives with good healthcare, safe housing and good paying jobs. In moments like this, we need masses of white people to show up, and we need to let other white people know that they belong in our movement.
Check out the official maydaystrong.org website here to see the map of where actions are already planned!
Required: Get your event on SURJ’s Mobilize by tomorrow (Wed. 4/16) at 5PT/8ET! Do this whether you’re hosting a SURJ contingent at an already-planned rally or planning your own.
We’re holding a mass webinar at this time, so having your event on our SURJ Mobilize by then will get it in front of a lot of SURJ members’ eyes.
Why is there a SURJ Mobilize map in addition to the Coalition’s Mobilize map?
It allows you to advertise the pre-rally SURJ meet-up and post-rally SURJ debrief – this is a key way to welcome new SURJ members!
It gives you direct access to see who has signed up – that’s key to tracking your recruitment progress.
It also gives SURJ staff direct access to signups – that will allow us to send out a big textbank and email blast to SURJ members a few days before May 1 and invite people to your event.
Spend time doing recruitment at your next Planning Team or Circle meeting:
If you haven’t already, set a recruitment goal
Each person make a list of who they will recruit
Spend time texting and calling using the templates in the Toolkit
Get rolling with messaging and visuals prep:
All Planning Team members: Take 10 minutes to review the Communications Guide in the Toolkit, especially the messaging guidelines.
Communications Lead: Start posting on social media (make a Facebook event if that’s right for your community), make a plan to print or make signs, and – if you’re organizing your own action – make a list of press contacts
Highest priority: Get your event on SURJ's Mobilize Map!
If you get your event up by Mon. 4/21 at 10pm ET, it will be included in our BIG text and email blast to over 50,000 people going out Tues. 4/22 that gets people signed up for their local event! Don’t miss out on this chance to get the word out! Don't worry - itdoes not need to be perfectly finalized to get up on our SURJ Mobilize Map.
Schedule time to make phone calls, send text messages, and post on social media! This is the week all of your initial outreach should go out.
Review the Safety and Security Guide, in our Toolkit
Check in with your team about what they should be focusing on in their role. Check out the Toolkit for that info.
