The Grand opening of the Spartan Shack 1983
Spartan Shack History
Timeline:
1965-1980 DECA Store located in Room 206 of the old building near the doorway. The store consisted of a counter and a display case. The students sold school supplies.
1980 The DECA Store has been granted permission to use the space in the Link. That space had been previously used as a 'lounge' space for Seniors. From 1980-83 the DECA Store had very limited inventory.
1983 The store interior is painted - the original colors were pumpkin orange and chocolate milk brown. New colors were white, columbia blue and a red stripe. New inventory was ordered (as previously described). Art teacher and legend Ron Orlandi painted the new sign that appeared above the roof and the Spartan Shack was born.
1990 Students initiate a Christmas Sale. Perfect opportunity to coordinate Product, Price Place and Promotion. The Christmas sale becomes an annual event.
The 'DECA Store' space was a blank canvas in 1983 and it provided the marketing program with an amazing opportunity. It started as literally nothing and within a couple of years it was a vital piece of the marketing program and a perfect opportunity for students to apply what they had learned. The class of 1990-1991 originated the idea of the Christmas Sale.
The kids decided to name it the Spartan SHACK because the little roof thing was already in place. From 1965-1980 a 'store' was run in Room 206 selling school supplies, etc. In 1980 it was moved down to The Link where it appears that nothing was done to enhance the space.
Fast forward to the fall of 2018 and the Spartan Shack reveals a brand new space in the re-model of SHS. We are a school based enterprise. A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods/services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in marketing, finance, hospitality or management. We are a operational learning lab where there are many opportunities to see our best laid plans in action sometimes things go well and other times we learn from our experiences. School-based enterprises are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. For many students, they provide the first work experience; for others, they provide an opportunity to build management, supervision and leadership skills. We sincerely thank you for your patronage from the only SBE at SHS!
