What is Knowledge Bowl?
Knowledge Bowl is an academic competition that challenges teams of students to work together, develop strategies, and answer questions in a fast-paced environment. It’s often described as "an athletic competition for the mind." Teams from Sunnyside High School compete against other schools in our region, aiming to qualify for the Washington State Knowledge Bowl Championship. Questions cover a variety of subjects, including math, science, history, literature, and current events.
What is the competition format?
Knowledge Bowl competitions consist of two parts:
Written Round: Teams complete a multiple-choice test together, with their score contributing to the overall standings.
Oral Rounds: A moderator reads questions aloud, and teams use a buzzer system to "buzz in" and answer. Points are awarded for correct responses, and teams must think quickly to outscore their opponents.
How many players are on a team?
Each team consists of six players, though schools may enter multiple teams in a competition. At the regional level, each school selects one team of six players to represent them in the final rounds.
How many meets are there in a season?
There are typically five meets throughout the season, including regionals. If a team qualifies for state, they will compete in an additional meet at the Washington State Knowledge Bowl Championship.
How does a team qualify for state?
Our region consists of four schools, with the top two from our regional competition advancing to the state championship.
