Birthday: Birthdays are very special to students. Please let me know a few days in advance if you will be sending in treats. Treats must be in keeping with Sunman Dearborn’s Smart Snack policy. You may also work with our cafeteria and have them bring down a snack. Please print and send in this Birthday Treat Form. If your treat will need plates, forks, etc., please send them in as well.

According to the BES Student Handbook, invitations should only be distributed in school if the whole class is invited.

Bucket Filling: At the beginning of the year, we read a book called Have You Filled a Bucket Today? Since then, students have been working on “filling our bucket” with good and thoughtful actions. Yesterday, they achieved that goal.

C

Codes: Parents may see notes at the top of work pages that go home.

  • DT means did together.
  • EP means Extra Practice. These pages may be completed at home for extra practice, but do not need to be returned to school.

D

Delays: When school is delayed, buses arrive at 9:30. I you are driving your student to school, please plan for them to arrive at 9:30. This will allow our class to make the most of the short day.

Dress Code: This can be found in the Student Handbook. Here are the highlights:

    • Students must wear closed-toed shoes.
    • Shirt must have sleeves and no expose mid-section. Tank tops are not permitted

Grading System:

First Grade teachers in the Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation use a Standards-Based Grading system. Throughout each quarter we will collect data of each student’s achievement through student work, performance tasks, observations, weekly tests, and end of quarter assessments. Achievement is identified through a 4,3,2, and 1 number system on work that is graded and sent home, as well as, quarterly report cards. A “4” shows that the student consistently exceeds mastery above current grade-level expectations. A “3” shows that a student consistently meets and demonstrates mastery of current grade-level expectations. A “2” shows the student is emerging and making some progress. A “1” shows that a student has yet to meet current grade level expectations and is well below the benchmark.

Some areas will be graded with an O, S, N scale. An “O” indicates outstanding performance. “S” indicates satisfactory performance. “N” indicates that the student needs improvement in this area. These subjects include: Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, Gym and Citizenship.

H

Homework: I believe that it is important for students to practice skills at home. Homework also provides the parents a peek at what skills children are working on. Typically, students will be expected to read for about 20 minutes per evening and practice spelling words for a Friday test. In addition, students will frequently have a math page to complete at home.

You will begin recieving a weekly assignment sheet on August 17 that outlines homework for each evening.

Home/School Folder: Please look in your child’s Home/School Folder each evening and sign the weekday box to show that you have seen it. Students will earn a sticker the next day when their parents have signed the behavior chart.

Library Students will begin checking out books on Friday. I prefer that these books go home each night and come back to school every morning. This practice provides students the opportunity to take AR tests on their library book. They can also check out another before the next library class if needed.

Students will begin checking out books at their reading level. Reading levels are determined by students' individual reading performanc. I will adjust them as needed.

Snacks: Students may bring their own snacks each day for both morning (9:40) and afternoon (1:20) recess. All snacks should be in keeping with the Sunman Dearborn Smart Snack guidelines. Please do not send candy to school for snack.

Student Handbook: This may be found on the Bright ES website.

T

Toys: Students are not permitted to bring toys from home. This avoids issues with loss and breakage. We do have playground toys, as well as toys for indoor recess.
