As the world faces an unprecedented health and economic crisis due to COVID-19, communities are responding to the pandemic by emphasizing social distancing measures to slow the spread of transmission. Like many countries, India is under a nationwide lock-down. Though this is ensuring safety and health through physical distancing, it is significantly impacting millions of people who don't have the luxury of resources to support themselves during the lockdown.
One such impact is among children, those that receive free school meals are especially at risk of hunger. At the Sunaayy Foundation, 450 children and their families are part of this group who are facing serious hardships. Parents of Sunaayy children are migrant laborers and live "hand to mouth." They have no income or savings, and are soon to run out of basic provisions needed for survival. These families are more likely to die from lack of food than the novel coronavirus. Is there a way to prevent this?
The Government is doing all they can to ensure people receive food and basic supplies, but due to the magnitude of the calamity and the number of people in need of immediate relief, local nonprofits are stepping up to provide additional help. Since Sunaayy’s large family is directly impacted, we swiftly changed gears to educate families on the coronavirus, its impact, and safety precautions that need to be met. Additionally, we partnered with local suppliers and food distributors to arrange 2 weeks of bare necessities for the families. Sunaayy will continue to focus its efforts on the slums where Sunaayy learning center students and their families reside. As we prepare to scale up essential supplies and food drives for our families, we need your help in the upcoming weeks.
Your donation will support vulnerable families in our community. Please join us in our efforts to keep them safe and healthy at this time of monumental crisis.
