To support families during this challenging time, we have compiled a list of digital resources to support extended learning. We will continue to update resources weekly. It was intentionally limited this first week as families and staff adjust to the new schedule.
While students are at home, we encourage you to support activities that harness student's natural curiosity and creativity.
Before accessing digital materials with your student, we also recommend reviewing the importance of reviewing privacy policies.
For technology support, please call 253-891-6111.
We understand that having students home for extended periods of time can be difficult. Below is a list of suggestions to keep kids' minds engaged, give students structure, and provide balanced experiences during this unprecedented time.
Get outside- Getting fresh air and out of cramped environments is important for people. Try to make time for your child to enjoy the outdoors.
Get exercise- The World Health Organization recommends children and youth aged 5–17 accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily. So have them walk around the house, go for a hike, ride bikes, do yoga, play outside or any variety of other exercises.
Read- Reading is important for all our students. 30+ minutes a day of reading is ideal to keep their minds learning and keep their skills fresh. As our children read, feel free to ask questions like the ones in this document.
Create- Have students use their creative minds to make, draw, build, design, paint, craft, cook, or bake.
Engage minds- Ask children questions, have students explain their thinking, challenge students with complex problems, and keep their brains turned on.
Students need structure- During school, students have structure to their day. It will be helpful to their mental health to give some sense of structure over this time. Below is an example of a schedule families could use with their children.
Give choices- Within that structure, give students choice in their day so they are empowered and have some say in their time. Examples of choices may be a choice in the books they read, which activity they do first in the schedule, or what activity they do for exercise. Giving a designated free time is also important so they can do the things they would like to do during that time.
Build Responsibility- Allow for some choice in household chores to have students help with.
Unplugged time- Throughout the day have unplugged time without devices. Do puzzles, read a book, take a walk, draw, craft, paint, have a discussion, ect.
