This course is designed to improve upon the required NJ Language Arts Literacy Proficiencies and will focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This course will be taught through a balanced literacy approach with an emphasis on each student’s individual needs and learning style. Students will be explicitly taught the following reading strategies: drawing conclusions, making predictions, cause and effect, sequencing, determining fact from opinion, determining author’s purpose, compare and contrast, finding the main idea, summarizing, visualizing, determining the POV and the habits of effective reading.
Required Materials:
Students are expected to keep a marbled notebook for notes and classwork, as well as a folder for handouts/this can be a section in a five ring binder. Students are expected to keep all work until the end of each marking period. Every student should bring their charged chromebook, a pencil/pen, a highlighter and a book of their choice to class each day.
