At Summit High School there are many opportunities to identify, recognize and reward excellence in mathematics. Students are offered the opportunity to compete in several mathematics competitions designed to challenge their abilities and participate in an enriching mathematics experience. The following competitions are held at various times throughout the school year:
NJML (New Jersey Mathematics League)
NJML is a statewide competition held six times throughout the school year. These competitions are held once a month beginning in October.
American Mathematics Competitions
The AMC10 and AMC12 contests draw over 5,000 participating schools nationally as well as internationally. The competition consists of a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice examination. Students who score extremely high may qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME).
This is a nationwide competition open to juniors and seniors only. Each district can register up to two teams of 3 to 5 students. Students will work together "to solve an open-ended, realistic, applied math-modeling problem focused on a real-world issue". This is an Internet-based competition. The students will select a Saturday or Sunday during the Challenge Weekend. They will have a 14-hour window to research, develop, and submit a solution. The submissions are reviewed by a panel of judges and scholarship prizes are awarded to the winners.
Other contests Summit High School students have participated in the past include the Association of Mathematics Teacher of New Jersey and the Continental Mathematics League.
