Please encourage others to come along! Part of the fun of being in a new place is to try new things. For a lot of your colleagues, hiking and fishing will be new experiences. Many of these sites are part of the Cleveland Metroparks, which I encourage you to explore (https://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/).
Here are a few spots along Lake Erie with access (Google-plus codes in parentheses, just copy these into google maps to get the destination). For all of these spots, you’ll see people fishing. Just ask them about tackle and the sorts of fish they’re going after. My son caught a huge sheepshead with a spinner near the Rock Hall of Fame. I usually target areas inside the breakwater. Just be on the lookout for “no fishing” signs near the docks. Fishing can be hit or miss, but it’s nice to be near the lake on a hot day. There are bait shops here, too.
Lakefront Reservation E 72nd Fishing Area (G9Q6+P6 Cleveland, Ohio). This is about a 5 minute drive from your dorm. Nearby is the Lakefront Nature Preserve (G9RC+5R Cleveland, Ohio), which has a few short trails.
E 55th street Marina (G9P2+7G Cleveland, Ohio). There’s a bait shop here. Call 216.431.3349 to find out if they are open.
Edgewater Park (F7Q6+FQ Cleveland, Ohio) also has a bait shop. Call 216.651.5591 to find out when they are open. There’s a beach here, too.
Emerald Necklace Marina (F5J9+FG Lakewood, Ohio). You can get nightcrawlers here. Call 216.226.3030 to find out when they are open. This is a the mouth of the Rocky River. If you head south along Valley Parkway, you will come across a number of fishing spots along the river. This is prime steelhead territory. Unfortunately, the fishing is slow in the summer. There is a really long hiking/biking trail that goes along the Parkway.
Euclid Beach Park/Wildwood marina (HCPP+WM Cleveland, Ohio). The Linda Mae head boat (https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Sports---Recreation/Linda-Mae-Fishing-Charters-Sightseeing-Tours-204813753003020/) docks near here. It’s not cheap ($85 per person, the last I checked) but a lot cheaper than regular charter. Mostly perch. They rent gear.
Lake Erie Bluffs (QRP9+H3 Painesville, Ohio). This is a little further out and is near a nuclear power plant, which might be unsettling. The fishing is kind of tough here. It has some really nice hiking trails, one along the beach. There is a good chance of spotting bald eagles here.

Mike Durcalec, the fisheries manager for the metroparks, lists a number of spots that were recently stocked and will be stocked pretty soon. You can find their locations at the Cleveland Metroparks website. If just want to catch a fish, these places are your best bet. These aren’t the most scenic spots, but there are short hiking trails nearby. Also check the outdoors page at https://www.cleveland.com/outdoors/ for news about where the fish are biting.
Hinckley Lake has kayaks and standup paddleboards you can rent for about $20 per hour (https://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/parks/visit/parks/hinckley-reservation/hinckley-lake-boathouse-store). With a kayak, you can access some hard-to-reach fishing spots. There are some really nice trails here, too. This is a nice choice for fun overall, and I would recommend this for bringing friends along. Some can just paddleboard or kayak for fun while you fish.
Another nice place to visit is Punderson Lake (https://ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/punderson-state-park). You should call to figure out if they are renting boats. A friend of mine who is a big bass fisherman likes to fish off the beach here, and there are a couple of fishing piers. There are some nice trails and a cool mansion which has been converted into a hotel. There’s a great disc golf course, so bring some frisbees and some friends.
Hogback ridge is a really nice park (http://www.lakemetroparks.com/parks-trails/hogback-ridge-park) that’s a little farther away. Fishing is on the river, which is slow in the summer. The trails are quite nice.
Cuyahoga Valley National park has a few fishing ponds (https://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/fishing-in-cuyahoga-valley.htm). I honestly don’t know how good the fishing is at these ponds because I usually go here to hike. Two easy and nice hikes are Ledges and Brandywine (https://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/recommended-hikes.htm)
