Water pollution occurs when lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers or groundwater are introduced or formed into physical, chemical or biological substances in water basins, or processes take place that lead to exceeding certain water quality control indicators or have harmful impacts on human health, aquatic ecosystems or the environment.
The main cause of water pollution is human activity, for example:
the discharge into the water of solid and radioactive waste, of oil and oil products in water bodies,
discharge of municipal, industrial and livestock waste water containing significant amounts of organic or inorganic substances or higher temperature.
pollution of soils and aquifers, and others.
Natural disasters and phenomena such as volcanic eruptions, water blooms (eutrophication), storms and earthquakes can also cause serious changes in water quality and ecological status.
