The Sudbury Public Schools Start Time Subcommittee and the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Start Time Subcommittee presents Dr. Chun Lim, MD, PhD, cognitive neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, on Thursday, January 31 at 7:00pm in the Curtis Middle School auditorium. Dr. Lim will be discussing the most recent medical research on adolescent sleep.

Dr. Lim presented to the Weston Public Schools in June 2017, which was followed by Weston’s implementation of later start times for their middle and high schools in September 2018. His presentation to SPS is part of ongoing efforts to educate the community on the public health issues related to early school start times and adolescent sleep deprivation. SPS’ Start Time Subcommittee (SSTC), composed of administrators, town employees, faculty, school committee members, and parents, formed in 2016, following the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation for later start times for middle and high schools. The current subcommittee’s goal is to present a recommendation to the School Committee this spring, for implementation in fall 2020, pending a successful vote by the School Committee.

In 2017, Lincoln-Sudbury created the LSRHS Sleep and School Start Time Committee, composed of School Committee members, staff, and community members, to gather input about a possible change in start time at LS. That committee surveyed parents, students, faculty, and staff and determined that a majority of LS students are not getting enough sleep according to the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines but noted the many issues surrounding a change in start time. The current LS Start Time Subcommittee is continuing the work started by the 2017 committee and will present implementation options to the full school committee later this year for potential implementation in fall 2020.

Dr. Lim’s presentation will also be broadcast live on Comcast channel 9 and Verizon channel 32, as well as live streamed on sudburytv.org. It will be available to view via video on demand on sudburytv.org.
