Professional Performance Standards
Students enrolled in the Nontraditional Doctor of Pharmacy pathway are required to complete the following Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) with a minimum of 200 hours per APPE and total of at least 1440 hours for all 5 APPEs.
The Ambulatory Care APPE will develop the student’s skills in providing patient centered care to patients in ambulatory care practice settings. Students will be responsible for finding an appropriate practice site.
Appropriate sites include: outpatient medical center, hospital-based outpatient clinic, outpatient physician clinic, free medical clinic, emergency room, urgent care clinic, home healthcare, or a setting in which patients are evaluated by healthcare professionals on an outpatient basis. You may use a community pharmacy only if it offers medication therapy management and/or disease clinic services (not just patient counseling or disease screening). The preceptor for both the Practice Portfolio and On-Site Experience must be a licensed pharmacist (BS or PharmD) with experience in an ambulatory care setting.
The Inpatient Acute Care APPE will develop the student’s skills in providing patient centered care to patients in inpatient acute care practice settings. Students will be responsible for finding an appropriate practice site.
Appropriate sites include: hospital/medical center, intensive care unit, specialty care unit, or an inpatient healthcare setting in which patients are cared for and managed by an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals for acute disorders or exacerbations of chronic diseases. The preceptor for both the Practice Portfolio and On-Site Experience must be a licensed pharmacist (BS or PharmD) with experience in the inpatient acute care setting.
The Medication Information APPE will develop the student’s skills in providing patient centered care by emphasizing the retrieval, evaluation and communication of health-related information in the management of medication therapy. Students will be responsible for finding an appropriate practice site.
Appropriate sites include: healthcare setting, pharmaceutical industry, or any other setting in which drug information activities are completed in the course of job duties. The preceptor must be a licensed pharmacist (BS or PharmD) with experience in drug information activities.
This course will develop the student's skills in providing care to patients in a pharmacy- or healthcare-related setting of their choice. Students will complete this course through an on-site experience at a practice site with a healthcare provider preceptor who engages in appropriate pharmacy- and healthcare-related activities. Students will be responsible for finding an appropriate practice site.
Completion of the Institutional APPE is only required for students who have not had previous or current internship/work experience in an inpatient hospital/medical center pharmacy setting in the US. This APPE must be completed as an on-site experience with a minimum of 200 hours either full- or part-time. Total hours include the time spent on-site and off-site completing the assigned activities. The preceptor must be a licensed pharmacist (BS or PharmD) with experience in the inpatient pharmacy setting.
Completion of the Community APPE is only required for students who have not had previous or current internship/work experience in a community retail, or outpatient pharmacy setting in the US.
